‘New York finish for Derby band’s new album release’
Derby band JamOnSunday have committed their mellow sound to CD for a debut release, Gardenia Park.
The album, a smooth blend of jazz and blues, features the band’s two founder-members together with a number of guest instrumentalists and singers to give it a rich, varied texture.
Song-writer, singer and acoustic guitarist Naran Rathod worked with bassist Frank Codrington to get the project onto the shelves of Reveal Records in Derby and Selectadisc in Nottingham.
Naran, a psychologist, said that Gardenia Park was recorded in Nottingham but mastered at New York’s Sterling Sound.
“It’s incredibly expensive but they do have an ‘after hours’ slot to give up and coming bands access to good mastering facilities and we paid about £1,500 – twice what we paid for the studio facilities” he said.
They are delighted with the result, which is carefully produced to show off the band’s mature musicianship.
“What we wanted to do was create that sense of surprise for people when they move from one track to the next,” said Naran.
“With a lot of bands, everyone is playing all the time and you get a similar sound on every song when, with a judicious use of instruments, you create more light and shade.”
The recording featured drummer Femi Olakunle and guitarist Simon Jackson, both of whom have now joined the band ahead of their summer gigs, which include Nottingham’s beer festival. They also hope to be among the bands at the Buxton fringe this year.
